Can you build a website for free
The short answer: yes, but with conditions. A fully free site does exist — it just will not be yours, or you will pay with your time instead of money. Below: what is genuinely free, what you still pay for, and where the catch is.
We wrote this article, and we sell a paid service. So we say it up front: we do not have a free plan either. Below we will not steer you towards ourselves — we will simply describe how it works.
What is genuinely free
Free builders. Many platforms have a free tier: you assemble a site and it stays online. That works, and for a simple task it is often enough.
A free address. Instead of your own domain you get a platform subdomain, in the form yourname.platform.com.
Ready-made designs. Templates are usually included for free.
What you still pay for
Your own domain. yourbusiness.uz is an annual payment, and no platform gives it away, because a domain is sold by a registrar, not by the platform. You can stay on a subdomain, but a client will not remember it, and trust is lower.
Your time. This is the largest and most often forgotten cost. On a free builder you assemble the site yourself: write the text, choose the photographs, arrange it. Two or three days of work is also a payment, just not in money.
Add-ons. The free tier usually lacks exactly what matters most: taking payments, delivering form enquiries to your inbox, analytics. Those are paid.
Where the catch is
The unspoken conditions are usually these four.
Somebody else's advertising. A free site may carry the platform's own advert or badge. On your site, in front of your client.
You cannot take the site with you. On many free platforms there is no way to export the site and move it elsewhere. If you want to move a year later, you do it all again.
The platform may close. A free service brings no revenue, so it can be shut down. Along with your site.
The site is invisible in search. This is not a technical catch but a substantive one. Neither on a free builder nor on a paid one does a site appear in search by itself: the page needs a title, a description and text. A beautiful empty site is absent from search — paid or free makes no difference.
When free is the right choice
If you are testing an idea. To learn whether there is demand you do not have to spend money. One page, one week, a decision based on the result.
If the site is personal. A portfolio, a study project, a page behind a link — free is enough here.
If you have no clients yet. When the business has not started, a site is not the first expense.
When free turns out expensive
If you sell through the site. Someone else's advertising, an unmemorable address and a broken form — each of these loses a client. One lost client is often worth more than a year's subscription.
If you spend on advertising. Sending someone who came from an advert to a free subdomain trades your own money for distrust.
If you are building for the long term. Leaving a site that cannot be moved after two years means building it again, that is, paying twice.
